Online introduction to computational oncology

I have recently found an interesting introduction to computational oncology on the website of Paul Macklin, a graduate student at UC Irvine.

The website comes complete with the stages of cancer evolution (not the usual 6 capabilities of Hanahan & Weinberg but a version a little bit coarse grained for my taste) and therapies. He also points out some of the challenges that need to be addressed such as explicitly incorporating the tumour microenvironment (it is a well known fact that some tumour cells behave like regular healthy cells if left in a different microenvironment from the one it comes from). Useful for people who might want to understand some of the aim of the papers I mention in my reviews.

Hi, and thanks for the mention. :-) That's my site.

I agree that it's a little coarse, and I actually hope to revise it soon. (Whenever I finish my dissertation, I suppose.) I'd certainly appreciate any suggestions on what you'd like to see. (You can find my email address on my main webpage.) There will certainly be more mention of microenvironment, cancer stem cells, etc.

Also, please be on the lookout for our JTB microenvironment paper. It appears to have been temporarily removed from the "in press" section, presumably to appear in final form soon. (We sent in our corrected proof a few weeks ago.)
For now, it's available on my site for now. We're currently working on adding further tumor-microenvironment coupling, which is definitely a "pet" topic of mine.

Lastly, I'm really impressed with your blog, and I'll look forward exploring it!

Thanks, and have a great weekend!! -- Paul Macklin

Hi Paul,

Nice to hear from you. It is not often that I get one of the people whose work I write about to comment on my blog. I have already downloaded your paper and I'm just waiting to have a little bit of time to read it properly. The subject is entirely relevant for me so it should happen sooner rather than later. Congratulations on having it accepted in JTB!

Schönes Wochenende auch!

Vielen Dank, David. :-)

Thanks for the congrats on the paper. You'll have to let me know when you have one coming out. I did a lit search for you, but all I could find was your earlier work. I take it you focus on CA/agent-based modeling?

Sorry that it took me so long to respond; I'm writing my dissertation right now and am planning to defend in a month. Take care, and keep up the great work here! -- Paul Macklin

Hi Paul,

I am working on two papers at the moment. One of them using CA/agents and another one with game theory. Will let you know more in a couple of months when they are ready(ier).

Good luck with thesis writing and make sure you take some holidays afterwards :)

I guess no chance to see you in the workshop at the institute for biomathematics in March in Columbus?

Thanks for sharing this introduction to computational oncology. I'm really interestes in this theme, but I had not been able to find a good resume as this one. Now I could learn a quite more about this fanatstic stuff.
